ScriptWrite F.A.Q.

ScriptWrite – FAQ

Q: I deleted a script from ScriptWrite, is there a way to restore it?
A: Unfortunately, no. Once a script is deleted from the app, the information is deleted from the phone.

Q: Is there a ‘force’ back up to Dropbox?
A: No, you must remember to export to Dropbox to have your newest version saved on Dropbox.

Q: Is there a way to embed notes into a script in ScriptWrite?
A: No. Script notes are not handled in ScriptWrite.

Q: Does ScriptWrite handle page numbers and page breaks between importing/exporting from a desktop software?
A: No, ScriptWrite does not recognize page numbers or page breaks at this time.

Q: I’ve written something in Microsoft Word (.doc). Can I import this into ScriptWrite?
A: No, ScriptWrite is only compatible with the following file formats: Final Draft 8 (.fdx) Movie Magic Screenwriter 6 (.txt) and Celtx (.txt).

Q: I’m using the FADE IN Professional Screenwriting Software on my desktop computer. However, the mobile app version of FADE IN doesn’t work well. It’s very difficult to use. What format is best when exporting from this software to use in ScriptWrite?
A: When exporting from FADE IN, use the .fdx for format. In FADE IN, go to your top toolbar, click on ‘file’, then choose ‘Export’, then choose ‘Final Draft (.fdx)’. Navigate to the ‘ScriptWrite’ folder in your Dropbox folder and save the file there. That will make it easy to import the file when you open ScriptWrite on your iPhone or iPad.

Q: When I import my script, the formatting is completely off! What could be the problem?
A: Be sure that your script starts with a SLUGLINE ELEMENT. Even using a FADE IN: at the very beginning can sometimes throw off the formatting. It’s best to start your script with an official Slugline. This goes for any of the file types from any of the desktop software programs that we are compatible with.

Q: What happened to the Wi-Fi Import Function?
A: We eliminated the Wi-Fi Import Function in Version 2.2.2 because we were having quite a few issues and we found that a majority of our users are utilizing Dropbox and Email as their main Import Option.

Q: How do I import via Email?
A: To Import via email, simply email the exported file from your desktop software that you wish to import into ScriptWrite. On your device, click on the attachment in your email. You will be taken to a screen that shows the contents of the attachment. If it’s a .txt file, you’ll see the script as normal. If it’s an .fdx, you’ll just see a bunch of code! Now, look for the ‘open’ icon on the top right of the screen. Touch that and you will be given the option to “open in”. At this point, simply choose ScriptWrite and the file will be opened/imported into the app.

Q: I linked my Dropbox, but my files are not showing?
A: When you link your Dropbox account in ScriptWrite, a new folder will be created on your Dropbox. It will be called “ScriptWrite”. This is where the app looks for files, so be sure that your scripts are in this folder on your Dropbox account.

Q: Why is this thing deleting so much when I hold down the backspace key?
A: Currently, we suggest deleting by tapping the delete or backspace key, DO NOT hold it down. We are working on making the delete process more efficient and friendly.

Q: How do I use the External Bluetooth(BT) Keyboard?
A: First off, the bluetooth keyboard function only works on the iPad version of ScriptWrite.  The best method when using the BT keyboard is to be sure to connect the keyboard prior to opening ScriptWrite.  Once the keyboard is connected, open ScriptWrite. When you start a new script, or open an already existing script, you will see that the virtual keyboard is gone and the ScriptWrite toolbar sits at the bottom on the screen. If you wish to disconnect the bluetooth keyboard while you are in a script, turn off the keyboard.  A warning will pop up, hit OK, and the virtual keyboard will return.  If you want to connect your BT keyboard while in a script, turn on your BT keyboard. Once it connects to the iPad, you can hit the HW button. A warning will come up, hit OK, and the virtual keyboard will lower; the ScriptWrite toolbar will move to the bottom of the screen.

Q: What happens if I mess up and accidentally hit the OK and the ScriptWrite Toolbar disappears?
A: If this happens, simply exit out of ScriptWrite. Open your multitasking toolbar (double click the home button). Touch and hold the ScriptWrite icon and it will begin to wiggle. Touch the red ‘minus’ sign to close the app completely. Press the home button again to stop the icons from wiggling. Open ScriptWrite, go back into your script, and you will see the ScriptWrite Toolbar is back.

Q: What file types are compatible with ScriptWrite?
A: ScriptWrite is compatible with .fdx files from Final Draft 8, .txt files from Movie Magic Screenwriter 6, and .txt files from Celtx.  Not all features all available from the .fdx or .txt files that come from FD 8 and MMSW 6.

Q: Can I duplicate a script?
A: Yes, from the Main Menu screen, touch ‘Edit’, then touch the name of the script you wish to duplicate. A menu will appear asking to ‘Duplicate’ or ‘Rename’

Q: Can I rename a script?
A: Yes, from the Main Menu screen, touch ‘Edit’, then touch the name of the script you wish to duplicate. A menu will appear asking to ‘Rename’ or ‘Duplicate’

Q: Why don’t you support .rtf file format?
A: The .rtf file format doesn’t play well with the iOS.

Q: How do I change an Element to another Element type?
A: After you have written an element, and you want to change the element type (i.e., you wrote a line of Action that you want to now make Dialogue), put your cursor in the element that you want to change. Now, touch the icon of the corresponding element type that you want to change it do. So, if you wrote Action, put your cursor in that element, then touch the Dialogue icon in the ScriptWrite Toolbar. You will see that the Action line is now a Dialogue line.  You can change any element type to any other element type.
